Hello and Welcome!
I love photography. It does not matter to me whether it is family celebrations, weddings, landscapes or flowers. For me it is about preserving
that magical moment in time.
I love capturing life through a lens. Whether you are out walking and you see a shaft of sunlight catching the water or capturing a child's laugh, a really great photo takes you back to the moment and lets you relive the emotion. A really great one can make you laugh or even cry...

My Style
I love to photograph weddings! I love weddings because they pack every emotion into one day and sometimes into 5 minutes! I love the build up, the excitement, the last minute changes, the mishaps, and the perfectly laid plans. Surprise, joy, happiness, sadness can all be guests at a wedding. So much emotion packed into one day!
I blend photography styles to photograph both posed and unposed images. This allows me to capture the raw emotion and at the same time ensure that no one is missing from the photos. I meet with every bride (and groom if he wants) to discuss ideas (it’s your day after all!!!). Between us we will plan the day. I'll photograph this and all the unplanned stuff as well.
The Day Itself
I will meet and agree the format of the day in advance. One suggested itinerary would be to meet the groomsmen gathering in the morning and get all those spontaneous lads bonding shots. I will meet the bride and get the “Here come the girls” shots. We then all meet in the church. From the church we would go with the bridal party to a different location that we agree in advance.
Typically, it is back to the hotel for the family shots. I can stay through the meal and take in the speeches. I get all those "I can't believe the best man said that" shots not to mention the "Thank God he did not say that" shots. I will stay right through the first dance.
Wedding Albums
Wedding albums are AMAZING. It's wonderful to see the energy of the day translated into photographs onto paper. There are as many types of wedding albums as there are people. It allows the bride and groom create a bespoke personal memory of their day. You can choose from the classic leather bound album with 10X8 inch pictures to a more contemporary storybook wedding album. You can leave the entirety of the design to me or we can go through samples together or you can shape your own story. I also produce parent albums, mini-albums, and pocket books of the same design. It’s a beautiful keepsake of your day for parents, family, friends or your handbag!
I have had many requests for wedding albums to be designed by people who got married in recent years. It has become apparent to me that for various reasons lots of couples don’t order an album when they get married. For anyone who has left the album on the long finger, I am happy to design using images from other photographers (provided you have the original high resolution images)
Engagement Shoot
It’s a wonderful opportunity for the couple to get to know me and my style and for me to get to know the bride and groom. We can shoot in my studio in Douglas in Cork or on location. The location can be anything (within reason). The beach, the woods, urban street scenes etc.; I'm open to ideas or I can create the shoot with your input. Get some lovely intimate or funky fun portraits or some of both.
We can create personal save the date cards, wedding invites, signing boards and signing books from the engagement shoot. For many couples the engagement shoot is the first time that they will be photographed professionally. This will ease the nerves on the big day itself and help hone in on your photo style.
What makes a great portrait?
"I hate seeing pictures of myself."
This must be one of the most common things you hear. I don't know how many times you take out the camera and you see people scurrying away
like a vampire seeing a crucifix.
Good portraits are all about people being at ease and relaxed. A great portrait can be totally unstaged, unrehearsed, no studio lights and be all the better for it.
Or a great picture could be all of these with the classic black dark backgrounds in that film noir style shot. If you want to get
a lovely family portrait with yourself, the hubby and the three and the five year old, they might not sit still long enough for you to look like
Lauren Bacall. Maybe in this case we are better off on a beach with the sun in the background and the waves crashing.
In the Studio or on Location?
The choice is up to you. We can do a portrait shoot in the studio. I shoot in the classic high key white background in studio or the more atmospheric classic black background. Or if you prefer we can go on location. I can also do both. I can transport the studio to your house and setup there. The end result will be equally good.
A portrait can also be of you or your family at your favorite place, at a beach, on a mountain, looking over a great view. Why not have your portrait taken there?
Regardless of location, I place the shots on the website for you to browse (password protected). You can choose your favourites and we can print and frame.
The packages I do include
- Framed or unframed
- 10 x 8 prints up to 30 x 30 prints
- Canvas, Acrylics and even Glass options
I can show every option from samples in the studio.
School Portraits
I shoot the school portraits on a contemporary white studio background which I setup in the school.
I mount the images in a more modern off white mount and we offer a contemporary black framing option.
I have been published in the Irish Examiner, Evening Echo, Cork News, Cork Independent, Primary Times, and the Douglas Post amongst others.
You can also see some of my images in the Cobh Heritage Centre and in that lovely restaurant and cafe Gossip in Rosscarbery.
To order a print of any of the images , please email us at rose@rosegowan.com. We can print in all sizes, and can supply all images framed or unframed. All frames are wood with high quality display glass and an excellent 2.5 inch mount.
